Author Guidelines

Important notice: Please be advised that Foucault Studies does not use the online submission tool. Papers submitted online will not be read. All submissions must be sent directly to the FS email adresss (see "Procedure" below for details).

Authors are responsible for the stylistic formatting of their own paper, and for proof-reading a word file before publication. Authors are equally responsible for all copyright permissions, and are liable for the content of their work. Sexist, racist, ageist, homophobic and libellous language is not acceptable.

Length and Type of Submission

Original articles should aim for a target length of 8,000-12,000 words; an abstract of 150 to 250 words and 5 keywords should also be provided.

Book reviews, which are commissioned, should be between 1,000 and 2,000 words.Review essays, also commissioned, should be between 2,000 and 6,000 words. If you are interested in reviewing a book for the journal, please contact the book reviews editor before writing the review.

Other types of manuscripts, for example comments or critical notes, or conference andseminar reports, should be discussed with the editors in advance.

Style

Manuscripts should be in English. They should be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced with 1-inch margins and justified paragraphs. The journal uses an adaptation of the Chicago Manual of Style. See the following document on how to apply our adaptation of Chicago Style: Foucault Studies Author Guidelines: footnote references and bibliography

Please avoid double returns (blank lines) between paragraphs; instead, indent the first line of each paragraph. Use only one space (not double spaces) between sentences. Please leave tabs at default settings.

Pictures, diagrams, and maps should appear in the text at the relevant place. Embedded web links to other material (for example, video or audio files) are acceptable, but these cannot be hosted on the journal website itself.

Please fully anonymize your manuscript; acknowledgements and references to the author’s own work should be removed for the duration of the review process.

Please submit a paper in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF format. Include, in a separate document, your name and affiliation, a brief biographical note, your postal address, and a list with the works retracted from the anonymized manuscript intended for peer review.

DOI Policy

As Foucault Studies is using Digital Object Identifier Numbers (DOI numbers) provided by CrossRef, authors should include the DOI number links after every bibliographical reference. The DOI is typically located on the first page of the electronic journal article, near the copyright notice. The list of references (works cited) should be formatted in the same way as the main manuscript.

The DOI system requires a list of references for all works cited. Therefore, we kindly ask authors to provide a full list of references along with the abstract, keywords, and biographical statement when submitting manuscripts to Foucault Studies.

Procedure

Submission should be sent via email attachment to submission.foucaultstudies@gmail.com.

Foucault Studies works according to a triple-anonymous peer review process. The editors do an initial evaluation of the anonymized manuscript to determine whether it deserves tobe sent out to external reviewers (we reserve the right to desk reject unsuitable manuscripts). The standard procedure is for each suitable manuscript to be anonymously reviewed by two referees, with a third one or a member of the editorial board who might be used to adjudicate where necessary. Please note that Foucault Studies does not re-review papers that have been previously rejected by the journal for publication.

There are no article processing charges (APC) when submitting your manuscript to Foucault Studies.

Call for cover art

If you would like to submit a cover for Foucault Studies, please send your proposal to the Managing Editors at submission.foucaultstudies@gmail.com. Over the years, Foucault has inspired the work of a number of artists. The journal would like to continue to feature a different cover for each issue. As Foucault Studies is a non-profit, diamond open access journal, we cannot remunerate your work, but we can offer extensive international exposure for it. People initially visiting the website will arrive straight at the cover, before accessing the content. The cover will also appear on the front contents page of the website. Details of the artist will be included on this page as well. When each issue is archived, the cover art will be archived as well, thus remaining accessible.
The specifications for the cover are as follows: it must be related to Foucault, i.e. it must be any kind of visual rendering of either Foucault himself or inspired by some aspect of his work. Creative departures from Foucault’s ideas are welcome. The words Foucault Studies must appear on the cover. The size must be 320 x 490 pixels and the file in PNGformat. The issue number should also appear on the cover. This can be discussed after submission of the work.
