Abstract

The army provides targeted training for its leaders. Leadership role performance enjoys top priority over all other training and activities, in the recognition that if the leader of a unit is not capable of leading and motivating his personnel, the unit will not be able to perform its duties. For this reason the army attaches great importance to the selection, training and development of its general staff. The early selection of leaders ensures that no one becomes an officer in the army without possessing personal leadership qualities. Even the highest A-level grades do not provide access to the officer training academy unless combined with personal leadership qualities. Similarly, the training at the officer training academy (Hærens Officersskole) is a specific executive programme coordinating all subjects to support the overall goal in the best possible way: to educate and train a leader. Later leadership development and the opportunities of the individual officer for continuing education are similarly dependent on the degree of leadership qualities and performance demonstrated by the officer during service. Therefore leadership is considered alpha and omega to both army and individual officer. The essence of leading – the leading of others – continues to be pivotal to the duties of an officer.
