Abstract

Based on the topical discussion on values, including ‘values-based management’, the article proposes a definition of what is meant by ‘values’. In principle, values are good; they can be personal and include a moral content. It is examined which values are found in a number of CAMS publications, and it is argued that their origin is a Christian, specifically a Lutheran, one. Luther lived in a hierarchical society while we live in a democracy, which implies that business values are created in mutual dialogue between management and staff where everybody can make themselves heard. An example of a leader who did not exhibit managerial behaviour is Struensee.
