Abstract

Based on personal experience of many years as leader in and of volunteer organisations, the author discusses the current characteristics of voluntary work. Old soldiers’ associations are used as examples, and lines are drawn back to the latter half of the nineteenth century when several popular movements were formed. Their golden age was particularly at the end of the last century; however, the turn of the millennium saw the decline of many volunteer organisations. Volunteer work is now losing support, and some organisations survive either by becoming increasingly commercial organisations or being supported by public funding.
