Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The text uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables - with captions - are placed within the text, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • Artificial intelligence has not been relied upon, either to generate content or to edit/modify language.

Author Guidelines

American Studies in Scandinavia publishes articles by scholars across the world on American literature, popular culture, film, history, politics, foreign policy, sociology, geography, the methods of American studies, and related subjects.

The recommended article length is 6000-8000 words (including notes), but not exceeding 9000 words, including a concise abstract and keywords. It is understood that any material submitted to the journal has not yet been published elsewhere and that is not currently under consideration by another journal.

Regarding references, please use MLA style for in-text citations and include a bibliography at the end of your text. Please keep content notes to a minimum and place them at the end of the text in a separate section. Submit your article via the online submission system as a Word document or as an rtf file (not as a PDF file).

Please note that the journal does not accept work generated by artificial intelligence/chatbots under any circumstances. This includes both text that has been generated by AI and text that has been modified using language checking software. The use of such software to check language blurs the distinction between an author’s own content and ideas and content and ideas generated by AI. In addition, while the resulting text may be free of grammatical errors, it reads as mechanical and lacking in depth. If the journal’s editor suspects that AI/chatbots have been relied upon in either the writing or the editing of a submission, the editor will contact the author to request a clarification of their use of AI. Following this, if the editor feels that the question of AI use remains unclear or problematic, the editor will defer to the journal’s editorial board for a final decision. Please note that the journal reserves the right to reject submissions in cases in which AI use is suspected and the article’s author fails to clarify the situation sufficiently.

For questions concerning submission, contact the journal's executive editor, Justin Parks, at Justin.parks@uit.no.
